World Blood Donor Day

PROFOH Headquarters, Washington DC, The World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated globally on June 14 to raise awareness regarding the critical need for safe blood and blood products while publicly thanking voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts. Officially established by the World Health Organization (WHO) alongside the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 2004, the event marks the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system. The official global theme for the 2026 campaign is “One Drop of Humanity – Give Blood, Save Lives”. It reminds communities that a single, brief donation is a powerful expression of solidarity, compassion, and collective civic responsibility. The campaign emphasizes that all humans are connected by a shared lifeline, and every single voluntary drop contributes directly to keeping global health systems functioning.

On this World Blood Donor Day, PROFOH encourages all who are participating globally through major community blood drives, blood safety awareness drives, and digital advocacy campaigns like the “One Drop of Humanity” challenge, pressing governments to dramatically bolster voluntary, unpaid blood collection systems, and we call on global health leaders to treat universal access to safe blood and plasma like the public health emergency it is. Investing in sustainable national blood systems is the most effective lifesaving medicine we have to secure a healthy future.
