World Hepatitis Day
PROFOH Headquarters, Washington DC, Celebrated annually on July 28, World Hepatitis Day raises global awareness of viral hepatitis—a silent epidemic causing liver inflammation, cirrhosis, and cancer. Established by the World Health Organization (WHO), the date honors Nobel laureate Dr. Baruch Blumberg, discoverer of the hepatitis B virus and its diagnostic test.
An estimated 304 million people worldwide live with chronic Hepatitis B or C. Viral hepatitis causes roughly 1.3 million deaths each year. This mortality rate translates to approximately 3,500 deaths every single day. Without aggressive intervention, viral hepatitis is projected to kill more people annually by 2040 than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined. PROFOH as an organization has treated thousands of Hepatitis patients in Egypt, Honduras, Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica and several other countries.
PROFOH calls all partners, government establishments, medical institutions to scale up Infant Immunization. Screen all pregnant women for Hepatitis B to prevent mother-to-child transmission. Move testing from centralized hospitals to local, community-based health centers. Deploy affordable, point-of-care rapid tests to deliver results in minutes. Generic Medication, overcome patent barriers to manufacture low-cost, generic Direct-Acting Antiviral (DAAs) for Hepatitis C. Enforce strict infection control and single-use needles across all medical facilities. Build digital, longitudinal registries to track patients from diagnosis to cure.
